Sprecken: The Destiny Dance

Here’s a series with a lot of potential that almost trips over its own overly complicated premise. Masked Mystery Man Mr. Midnight gets sent to a noir future, where he renounces being a masked hero to become a private eye under his given name of James Sprecken.

And, although he tells everyone who’ll listen he’s not a hero any more, he’d be a lot more convincing if he’d just, oh, take off the damn mask (which looks like a combination of the ’60s Captain Atom and a German fencing mask).

It’s a nice enough blend of science-fiction (even if it is a low-tech future) and hardboiled detective stuff, full of blazing guns and dames almost falling out of their slinky dresses, done up in a nice animation style that doesn’t owe anything to Bruce Timm (the style that’s most “homaged” these days, discounting manga) that’s almost as clever as its main conceit.
