Spaceman (Dell)
(Dell, 1963-1964, 1972)
™ and ©1963 Dell Publishing Co.
Spaceman (subtitled “A Fantastic Flight to Another Planet!!!”) was issued irregularly by Dell Comics starting in the mid-1960s, presumably to capitalize on public interest in space flight and exploration. Part Star Trek, part Space Family Robinson, Spaceman was undistinguished by either artwork or writing and appeared to be just another “comic product” that Dell published in its waning years to take up shelf space at the corner drugstore. The anonymous artist of Spaceman appears to have been told to draw like Dell’s resident comic-art master, Alex Toth, with the result being a lot of spare-looking figures and heavy blacks but none of Toth’s sense of design.
