Brenda Starr (Charlton)
(Charlton, 1955)
™ and ©1955 Charlton Publications, Inc.
When the Comics Code arrived in the mid-1950s, its tough standards precluded the publication of formerly popular comic subjects such as horror, suspense, and true crime. Publishers cast about for tame material to fill their pages, and Charlton acquired the rights to reprint the adventures of Dale Messick’s intrepid “girl reporter,” Brenda Starr, which were serialized in newspaper comic sections and had previously been reprinted by Four Star Comics during the 1940s.
Brenda Starr is a feisty redheaded reporter who stops at nothing to get to the bottom of crimes and adventures. One of the strongest female comic heroines in the early days of the medium, she was notable for her assertiveness and independence, frequently putting her personal life after her career as a reporter.
