Graphic novel series; reads right to left; black and white.

The first thing newcomers to the Gundam franchise need to understand about the series is that it will always consist of variations on the same theme: a civil war fought between Earth and its colonies by humans with enhanced abilities who are piloting giant robots. The story is more politically complicated than a standard space war. (To top it off, there’s always a cool masked Red Baron type of robot driver.)

The current version does a particularly good job of capturing the feel of Gundam Seed, which focuses more on human interaction and mobile battle suits and less on dry infighting among military factions.

Del Rey has done an outstanding job of packing this volume with loads of informative background material. These include character designs, vehicle schematics, and translator notes. The result is something that is bound to appeal to both hardcore fans and science-fiction readers still scratching their heads over this whole “manga” thing.
