Buddha on the Road

    (Aeon, 1996-1998)

Disillusioned and disheartened, Norman, a former member of Canada’s armed forces, returns home and signs a contract to kill God—a pretty tall order, to be sure. Norman’s adventures as the Great I Am’s would-be assassin bring him into contact with a group of derelicts who take him to the Virgin Mary, who tries to convert him to Christianity peacefully. When that doesn’t work, she calls in the archangels to lean on him, but Norman is rescued by Satan and joins the Legions of Hell, who are preparing to launch an invasion of Heaven. This plot brings Norman directly into conflict with God and Jesus, but things may not got according to Norman’s plan: after all, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Killing God is one thing, but the entire human race? Not so fast! This black-and-white series from Aeon is billed as “the comic God didn’t want you to read.” Check it out for an interesting spin on Christianity.
