In the year 2000, Marvel Comics began publishing their Ultimate imprint comics which relaunched some of their most prominent characters, re-imagined for a new audience. These titles were not intended to replace the ongoing classic series as the unfortunate Heroes Reborn experiment had done in the mid-1990s. This collection reprints the first issues of The Ultimate X-Men and The Ultimate Fantastic Four in a flipbook format.

The Ultimate X-Men gets things going quickly with an attack by the mutant-hunting sentinels in a setting where open hostilities already exist between humans and mutants. The “All New All Different” X-Men who debuted in Giant-Size X-Men in 1975 are the featured players in this version, although Wolverine has been recast as Magneto’s assassin.

The origin of the Ultimate Fantastic Four is significantly different than the one of their Silver Age counterparts. Beginning with Reed Richard’s birth, progressing through his torturous childhood (where his parents were unable to relate to him and his only friend was Ben Grimm), to his arrival at a government think-tank run by Sue and Johnny Storm’s father at the Baxter Building, this Fantastic Four promises to be the Ultimate line’s most surprising title.
