Outlook: Grim

    (Slave Labor, 2003-2004)
™ and ©2003-2004 Black Olive and Lesley Reppeteaux

Combining the dark humor and outré horror of a Tim Burton film with the feminine sensibilities and gothic imagery of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, Outlook: Grim fits perfectly within Slave Labor Graphics’ reputation for hip, eccentric, and twisted comedies. For example, in the first issue, the teenage Wren is celebrating her birthday, and her friend Chloe surprises her with an ouija board as a gift. The girls begin summoning ghosts, but Wren makes the mistake of inviting them to her house. When she does, the spooks take her request seriously, and she has to evict them with an umbrella. Creator Black Olive explores childhood fears with high spirits.
