Before Stargate, before Tango and Cash, before Escape from New York, there was (sit down, if you’re not already seated) Kurt Russell, child actor! It’s true—the macho star of contemporary action films got his start as the intrepid young scamp Jamie McPheeters in the otherwise forgettable 1963 TV series. Young Kurt plays Jamie McPheeters, a Tom Sawyer-type who travels 19th century America with his pa Sardius, a smooth-talking con-man. This little nugget of pop-culture trivia was memorialized forever in the one and only issue of The Travels of Jamie McPheeters, one of the millions of TV adaptations produced by Dell and Gold Key during the 60s and 70s. The comic version features photos of young Kurt Russell on the front and back covers, plus some lively interior artwork (unsigned) in the style of Jerry Grandenetti.
