Valeria the She-Bat (Windjammer)

    (Windjammer, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Neal Adams

Valeria the She-Bat, a two-issue mini-series from Acclaim’s Windjammer imprint, marks an infrequent appearance of one of comic art’s most influential illustrators, Neal Adams. As with most of Adams’ work, the actual story line behind Valeria, a well-endowed fashion model by day and bat-creature by night, and her bestial were-brother ‘Rilla as they take on their age-old nemesis Lith Kasti, is less important than the stylistic flair he brings to the storytelling.

Fans of Adams’ ornate and decorative technique will find what they came for, especially anyone who remembers his work on the first Man-Bat stories in Detective Comics in the late 1960s. Valeria and her world owe quite a bit to both Man-Bat and the vampire tales that Adams illustrated for Warren Magazines, both updated for the 1990s and benefiting from exquisite coloring and reproduction.
