Face (Vertigo)
(Vertigo, 1995)
™ DC Comics, Inc. ©1996 Peter Milligan and Duncan Fegredo
In 1995, DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint began a series of “Vertigo Voices” one-shots, starting with “Face” by Peter Milligan and Duncan Fegredo. In “Face,” David Scholem, a mediocre, conceited plastic surgeon, is given a commission by Andrew Sphinx, a recluse whom many consider to be the world’s greatest living artist. Without even knowing the nature of the operation to be performed, Scholem was obligated to say “yes” to the job. For him, it meant a chance to practice a bit of his own artistry on the master artist. On a less grandiose scale, Scholem’s boss had also told him that if he refused the job, he might as well pack his office up and hit the road.
So Scholem and his lovely wife traveled to a faraway island to meet Sphinx. It was only once they landed that Sphinx revealed that he wanted to practice a new form of art…using his own face as the canvas.
