The Spirit: The New Adventures

    (Kitchen Sink, 1998)
™ and ©1998 Will Eisner

The Spirit is widely recognized as one of the high points of comic book art. Created by Will Eisner, The Spirit started as a popular comic strip before making his way into the comic books in Police Comics #11. It was in comics that Eisner’s storytelling gained its trademark fluidity and inventiveness. Eisner proved himself to be a master of the medium, using different types of lighting, points of view, and other cinematic techniques to enhance the story. He then went further to pioneer new techniques such as using overlapping panels to relate two characters’ points of view of similar events, or putting comics themselves in the story by having the characters read about their own actions.

With its 1997 debut, this series continued in Eisner’s tradition while using newer creators such as Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and Neil Gaiman. Although the master himself contributes only occasionally, this series serves as an impressive testament to how much he has brought to comics.
