It was a pleasant Sunday afternoon in Rolla, Missouri. Six weeks ago, a man called Jimmy Dorne had met a nice woman and begun a whirlwind courtship. Her dad’s seventieth birthday seemed like a nice time for Jimmy to meet the family. Little could the woman have guessed that “Jimmy” wasn’t his real name—or that before the party was over, he would have murdered her dad.

This was just one episode in a long string of murders being traced by FBI agent Neal Mathis. On their face, the murders had nothing to link them—no common modus operandi, no physical evidence, no witnesses—not even an apparent motive. In fact, it was that sheer lack of leads that was the only thing that tied them together. The work appeared to be the work of a professional, but one who wasn’t being paid for his work. Agent Mathis was hunting a ghost, a professional serial killer…a man known only as “Alias:.”
