As comics began appealing to an older audience in the late 1940s, some Western comics followed the trend toward greater grit and realism. Outlaws combines the flair, innocence and excitement of the Golden Age comic style with sturdier and less predictable stories to offer a satisfying reading experience for fans of pulp and paperback Westerns. These aren’t classics, but the tales of range desperados are a step beyond the hackneyed cowboys and Indians fodder of many similar titles. D&S Publishing also employed talented young artists like Matt Baker, Al MacWilliams and Frank Frazetta—although the art styles of all three of these future greats (especially Frazetta) were rather crude and undeveloped at this point in their careers.
