Translated from the French edition, Feux, this is the story of man’s tragic separation from nature. When the battleship Anselm II is sent to investigate the mysterious island of Saint Agatha, Lieutenant Absinthe is slowly overcome by the raw beauty and purity of the island. As he gradually learns of the island’s bizarre inhabitants his separation from the rest of the crew becomes more evident until he is completely under the control of the lush greenery of nature which surrounds him. His revolt from all things manmade eventually leads to all out war as the battleship attempts to destroy the island.
A wonderful metaphor for mankind’s never-ending attempt to conquer nature, this story is beautifully written and illustrated by Lorenzo Mattotti whose abstract, expressionistic style in lovely pastels is reminiscent of Peter Kuper’s art.
