Who is Jack Staff? Think of him as the original Captain Britain, re-envisioned with the same admiration and intensity as (though with a little less sophistication than) Alan Moore’s Marvelman.

If you’ve been following the black and white self-published series, you know what to expect. The color art adds a nice touch and brings this series a step closer to its inspiration: classic Marvel comics of the 60s and 70s. The same joy and enthusiasm are present, but placed in a modern setting that isn’t too gritty or overly realistic.

If Grist knows one thing about comics, it’s how to pace the tale impeccably. The plot is broken down into various places, settings, and even points of view, as various characters break the fourth wall—but not in a corny, She-Hulk manner.

If this title suffers from anything, it’s the plague of infrequency. What was promised as a bimonthly wound up being quarterly, with multiple issues solicited way before their actual release dates. In the meantime, Grist’s first series, Kane, is also being reprinted by Image and worth twice the cover price.
