Silent Dance
(Slave Labor, 2005)
™ and ©2005 Matteo Casali and Grazia Lobaccaro
Sir Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion states, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” His genius has proven a godsend to many a writer, whose plots revolve around a situation metaphorically based on this law. So it is that, with Silent Dance, readers have Adrian, the ages-old vampire whose foil is Hector Mydlar, last in a long line of hunters born to hunt the lineage to which Adrian belongs.
The story is not new, but various plot elements make it a fresh one. Adrian, for example, is a vampire who feeds on dreams. Hector’s moral compass and personal vampire-hunter guidebook are hardly the ideal good-guy actions (or motives) that fill so many stories like this. Both are characters with multiple layers, and it’s enjoyable (and even borderline contemplative) to see what they do and how they do it.
More than one twist will keep readers on their toes, even up to the final page. As vampire stories go, this one features dark entertainment that may pleasantly surprise the reader.
