Once looked down on as puerile or at best, a meaningless distraction for those who may be easily amused, comics and their creators have finally achieved a modicum of long–awaited respect. This may be simply because many of today’s critics have fond memories of the comics of their youth or even more incredibly, still read comics as adults.

Coppervale’s International Studio, subtitled “The Illustrated Journal of the Romantic and Fantastic,” is a large–format art book dedicated to critiquing fine art, commercial art and yes, even comic art. The editor, James A. Owen readily admits that the subject matter of the magazine, “may seem to be mostly about what I like….” And so a comprehensive interview with Barry Windsor Smith, abundantly adorned with high quality reproductions of his drawings and paintings, as well as a review of a 70th Anniversary Special Edition of the pulp character: The Spider, are completely at place in this impressive magazine.
