What If Dr. Doom Had Become The Thing?
(Marvel, 2005)
™ and © 2004 Marvel Characters, Inc.
In early 2005, the House of Ideas released a series of one–shots that endeavored to recapture the spirit of the best of the alternative spins on Marvel Universe continuity that appeared in its What If…? series. There is little doubt that this effort from writer Karl Kesel (Challengers of the Fantastic) and artist Paul Smith (Leave It to Chance)—unabashed Silver Age fans, both—is one of the best of the lot. Here, a brash, arrogant Victor Von Doom worms his way into the brilliant Reed Richards’ good graces and takes Ben Grimm’s place on the fateful rocket launch that led to the formation of the fabulous Fantastic Four; but don’t count Aunt Petunia’s favorite nephew out of the action. This fun one–shot has more twists and turns than the Hulk coaster at Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure; it’s a thrilling, old–fashioned ride through an alternative vision of the early days of the Marvel Universe.
