Vext
(DC, 1999)
™ and ©1999 DC Comics
When the “powers that be” decide that the Great Beyond has become a little too crowded, some of the more obscure and minor deities are commanded to vacate and be “relocated.” Vext, the Patron Deity of Mishap and Misfortune, is one of these unfortunate gods set adrift in a bewildering universe. Of course most things are bewildering to Vext (get it? vexed), who, true to his character, has a difficult time with life. For some reason, he didn’t receive his Relocation Preference Form. His wait in line is a mere 27 years. When he finally gets to see his caseworker (after a computer crash), she can’t find his name in the database. This guy just can’t get a break.
Writer Keith Giffen brings the same sense of parody and self-deprecating humor to this title that he and J. M. DeMatteis brought to the Justice League in the early 1980s. Here, the absurdity feels appropriate because it is not at the expense of classic characters.
