Mucha Lucha
(DC, 2003)
™ and © DC Comics
Based on the “hit” Warner Bros. cartoon, Mucha Lucha #1 is a Toy Story-inspired comic book starring a trio of diminutive Mexican wrestlers drawn in the simple, super-deformed style of The Powerpuff Girls or South Park.
Two sentient action figures vie for the affection of a young masked wrestler, and the boy must make a heart-wrenching decision as to which one he prefers. Actually, the diametrically opposed action figures simply beat each other up until one claims himself the victor, effectively kicking the other out of the proverbial toy box.
There’s plenty of fighting and grandstanding going on, the boy learns something about loyalty, and it’s kind of amusing (in an odd sort of way) that all the characters in this wacky world seem to be masked wrestlers. Still, there’s not much to recommend here for older readers. Youngsters, on the other hand, especially Hispanic boys in the process of learning to read, will probably get some measure of entertainment and/or education out of the issue.
