Night Rider

    (Marvel, 1974-1975)
Marvel

This title reprints the adventures of the original Ghost Rider—not the flame-headed spirit of vengeance who is so familiar to today’s comic fans—but the caped western adventurer who predated him. Loosely based on legendary figures like the Headless Horseman, this Ghost Rider has no relationship to the current one other than the name. As such, Marvel chose “Night Rider” as the title when they reprinted his original adventures.

The Night Rider in question is Carter Slade, a former school teacher who was shot down by outlaws and left for dead. Luckily, he was saved by a group of Indians, who nursed him back to health. It was then that the Great Spirit intervened, giving Slade the tools to become a phantom of the frontier. Clad in a specially blackened cloak, he is able to make parts of his body seem to float in mid-air, terrorizing outlaws as he makes a stand for justice.
