Lovecraft (DC)

    (DC, 2004)
™ and © 2004 DC Comics, Inc.

Based on a screenplay by Rodionoff and adapted to comics by Giffen, Lovecraft is the story of the known life of horror master Howard Phillips Lovecraft and the private life he revealed only through his works. Were Cthulhu, Yog-Sothoth, and the other Elder horrors elements of Lovecraft’s imagination—or was his writing a means to prepare the world for their unholy arrival?

The known portions correspond with actual events in Lovecraft’s life. The secret part? Maybe that really happened; maybe it didn’t. Only HPL knows for sure, and he’s not talking.

The art has two distinct, but complementary, styles. The “real” events are bleak and a little creepy. The “imaginary” portions are highlighted with bright colors that actually succeed in making them more creepy.

It’s a great story with exceptional art, but the price tag is a little off-putting for those not already invested in Lovecraft. The inevitable paperback will, no doubt, be a more accessible purchase for many. In the meantime, these slim hardcovers that DC releases with some regularity will continue to tantalize those on the borderline.
