Bombaby

“Like nothing else” is that rarest of accolades, and Bombaby certainly deserves it. Anyone familiar with Indian cinema (and those who aren’t, do so in hurry; in five years, Indian films will be what Hong Kong movies were five years ago: the launching pad of a cultural invasion) will recognize the plot. It’s a collision between two Hindi movie staples: the romantic-comedy musical and the gangster-drama musical.

The spirited daughter of a wealthy family, Sangeeta disdains her arranged-by-family fiancé Sham (dressed in 1960s finery and wearing half a glass of wine around his neck) and suddenly discovers she has strange spiritual powers, which she uses to become involved in a street battle between gangsters over a strangely glowing attaché case.
But the description doesn’t do the comic book justice. When it comes to color, art, and character designs, this is as distinctive as anything published this year.
