The Doom Patrol (1st Series)

Appearing for the first time in My Greatest Adventure #80, the Doom Patrol proved a hit and that title was renamed The Doom Patrol beginning with issue #86. The Doom Patrol consists of Cliff Steele, a race car driver whose brain was saved in a robotic body after a crash; Rita Farr, the size-changing Elasti-Girl; Larry Trainor, the bandaged Negative Man; and their wheelchair-bound leader Niles Caulder, “The Chief.”

This unlikely team fought some of the strangest foes of the DC universe, until their apparent death in 1968’s Doom Patrol #120. 1973 saw two final, reprint issues of this series, then things fell silent. It was not until 1987 that The Doom Patrol would be resurrected in a new series. That series, which featured the brilliantly strange writing of Grant Morrison, took an already offbeat team, and turned them into something undreamed of.
