Gunsmoke (Dell)
(Dell, 1957-1961)
™ and © Dell Publishing Co.
Gunsmoke still holds the distinction of being the longest running US primetime TV series with recurring characters like Marshall Matt Dillon, Miss Kitty and all the rest. Should The Simpsons surpass it, Gunsmoke will still be the longest running TV Western, running from 1955-1975. The comic book didn’t fare so strongly, being published sporadically from 1956-1969 the earliest issues being part of Dell’s Four Color series. Each issue featured a colorful James Arness cover photo and are standard Western fare for fans of the genre.
