Gun Fu
(Axiom, 2003)
™ and ©2003 Howard M. Shum
Howard M. Shum and Joey Mason join forces to bring us the tale of Cheng Bo Sen, a cop in 1930s Hong Kong. He’s got a gun and he knows kung fu, hence Gun Fu. He also speaks hip-hop, a fact to which the rest of the world is blissfully oblivious.
After Cheng’s character is established by having him pursue gangsters (in a chase scene that goes on far too long), our hero is tapped by British intelligence (in the form of the Queen herself) to infiltrate a Nazi stronghold and sabotage a giant robot.
Guns, kung fu, hip-hop, Nazis, and giant robots — what’s not to like?
The back-up feature, “The Most Beautiful Women,” features a listing of Shum’s favorite actresses, models, and other celebrities, punctuated with caricatures. Sadly, of the 22 beauties described, only seven are depicted. It’s a shame, because it would be nice to have seen how more of them would have been rendered.
Don’t skip the creators’ bios. Even that oft-overlooked feature is cleverly written.
