David Mazzucchelli began publishing Rubber Blanket in 1991. The large-format volumes appeared annually, garnering high praise for Mazzucchelli’s own stories, as well as for those of his collaborators.

Although primarily black-and-white, Rubber Blanket has an upscale “art book” feel. The stories range from the Kafkaesque “Beyond the Last Pier,” to the political poster “If it Weren’t for Men,” to the super-hero saga in a single page, “Power.” While these volumes are more costly than conventional comics, they’re well worth a look.
