Part four of this long-running comedy-romance series begins with Yusaku—the the male love interest of the series—back at the boarding house, Maison Ikkoku, and down with a bad cold. Although he constantly fantasizes about telling his beloved Kyoko (the widowed manager of Maison Ikkoku) about his true feelings, he inevitably grows tongue-tied whenever the crucial moment arises. Meanwhile, other suitors have arrived and seem to be making a play for Kyoko. Will Yusaku ever get his nerve up? Or will he lose Kyoko to a more courageous suitor?

The ongoing romantic tension between Kyoko and Yusaku fuels Rumiko Takahashi’s Maison Ikkoku series. Takahashi’s artwork does a fine job of communicating the character’s emotions without getting bogged down in gratuitous detail. Maison Ikkoku deftly mixes slapstick comedy with some truly touching moments, adding up to a real winner of a series.
