Elektra: The Movie

Frank Miller invented the stoic, ninja–trained assassin named Elektra during his seminal run on Marvel’s Daredevil in the early 1980s. The compelling anti–heroine’s enormous popularity led to a number of spin–offs, min–series, and reinventions. Elektra’s cinematic incarnation seems to be on a similar trajectory.

Alias star Jennifer Garner variously received both praise and derision for her performance as Elektra in 2003’s gloomy Daredevil movie. Garner reprised the role two years later in her own movie without Daredevil. In it, Elektra betrays the Japanese crime syndicate known as the Hand (another key Miller invention from Daredevil) when she befriends two would–be targets and refuses to execute the hit. The Hand sends its deadliest assassins to exact revenge.

Illustrator Mike Perkins’ Elektra looks like Jennifer Garner, and that goes for other characters as well, including Terrence Stamp’s Stick and Natassia Malthe’s Typhoid Mary. In addition to the adaptation story, Elektra: The Movie includes a rare 9-page black and white Elektra story written and illustrated by Frank Miller, essays about Elektra and her favorite weapons, and the making of the movie. Elektra: The Movie Deluxe, additionally reprints Daredevil issues #168 and 181 and Elektra (2nd series) #1.
