Adolescence creates a unique challenge. The desire to be regarded as special, without being considered different. That’s exactly the type of no-win situation facing Farel Dalrymple’s young protagonist Sinclair in this black and white title published with a grant from the Xeric Foundation. It seems everywhere Sinclair turns he is plagued by obstacles. From being too young to watch his sister perform in bars to threats from neighborhood bullies, Sinclair feels like an outcast in his inner-city neighborhood. Everything changes though after he witnesses an angel fall to Earth, then looks on as the angel pays to have his wings deliberately hacked off. Sinclair gathers up the discarded wings and straps them to his own back, finding to his shock and delight that with them he can soar above the dirty, crowded streets he calls home. Now as “the boy with wings” Sinclair is finally special. But at what cost?
