Scarlet Spider
(Marvel, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Marvel Characters, Inc.
For a short time in 1995, Marvel’s Spider-Man titles went on a brief hiatus. You see, the infamous “Clone Saga” was in full swing. The Spidey many readers had known and loved since The Amazing Spider-Man #151 was revealed to be a clone, and the clone that supposedly died in that issue was revealed to be the real McCoy and going by the name Ben Reilly, a.k.a. the Scarlet Spider.
Now, the gimmick: for a few months, Marvel replaced their Spider-Man titles with Scarlet Spider titles; The Amazing Spider-Man became The Amazing Scarlet Spider, Web of Spider-Man became Web of Scarlet Spider, The Spectacular Spider-Man became The Spectacular Scarlet Spider, and Spider-Man became Scarlet Spider. Get the picture? This was probably one of the more interesting aspects of the “Clone Saga,” as it allowed readers to enjoy an old-fashioned, wisecracking, unmarried “Spider-Man” again.
