The Cross and the Switchblade
(Spire, 1972)
™ and ©1972 Spire Christian Comics, published by Fleming H. Revell Company. Based on the book ©1963 David Wilkerson
This Christian comic tells the true story of David Wilkerson, a preacher who traveled from a small town in Pennsylvania to New York City to preach to inner-city youth gangs.
Wilkerson behind leaves his pregnant wife to face the dangers of the urban jungle. He is shocked by the drug usage, sex, and violence of the big city. With the money raised by his congregation running out, he almost loses faith when he is unable to even speak to gang members who are being sentenced to jail for murder. But he finds hope again in the streets, in the life of a hardened gang member named Nicky Cruz.
Cruz has allegedly knifed sixteen people, and at first, Cruz and his gang threaten Wilkerson. But the preacher is determined to persevere. The story climaxes with a tense mass prayer rally filled with rival gang members.
