Weird Worlds

John Carter, Warlord of Mars and Pellucidar were two very interesting Edgar Rice Burroughs heroes who had previously been languishing as support material in DC’s Tarzan comics. With the birth of Weird Worlds in 1972, these heroes finally got the space they needed to come into their own.

Both John Carter and Pellucidar lived on savage worlds where the sword ruled supreme. In Carter’s case, the world was Mars, populated in Burroughs’ vision by four-armed giant Martians and beautiful princesses. Pellucidar’s world was quite similar (but with intelligent dinosaur creatures instead of Martians—the beautiful princesses were still there, of course).

Although it was not a particularly long-lived series, Weird Worlds was always interesting. Its ideas and style can be seen in later works such as Star Wars and Warlord.
