Flower of the Deep Sleep

Every day, Yuuki, a contemporary Cassandra with the power of prophetic dreams, desperately tries to change the outcomes of the disastrous fortunes she foresees. But when her twin sister Yuuka can’t be awakened from a deep sleep, she starts to receive visitations from a mysterious faceless little girl when she’s both awake and asleep. She discovers her sister’s condition is only one part of a much larger puzzle, the clues including kaleidoscopes and cryptic messages left on her cell phone. But Yuuki receives help from new friends who just happen to be cute boys at her high school, one with special powers of his own.

This may be a mixture of psychological thriller and supernatural mystery with a touch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Yuana Kazumi’s The Flower of Deep Sleep works best as an adolescent drama. Yuuka’s feelings of isolation and persecution are something with which the intended readership is sure to empathize. And, while Yuuka’s no Buffy, she never gives up, demonstrating that adolescence is survivable when you have the right support group.
