Friends of Maxx
(Image, 1996-1997)
™ and © 1996 Sam Kieth
Maxx is artist-writer Sam Kieth’s unusual tale of a large purple creature who is actually part of a young woman’s method of coping with abuse. But Maxx has little or nothing to do with this title which purports to feature his friends. Rather, Maxx is used as a master of ceremonies to introduce the stories much like Michael T. Gilbert’s Mr. Monster was used in Mr. Monster’s Super Duper Specials. Unlike those books however, these are original stories, not reprints.
The stories presented here concern the perception of reality, sexual roles, ego and as it says on the cover, “emotional jeopardy crap.” Kieth’s distinctive art style displays none of the usual idealized iconic figures, but rather large, exaggerated, ugly characters that reflect their personalities.
