Lobo/Mask
(DC, 1997)
™ and © 1997 DC Comics
When a small-time, largely incompetent crook named Ira Staub, stumbles upon an unusual green mask, he becomes a larger than life source of mayhem. This causes him to cross paths with Lobo who already is a larger than life source of mayhem.
The Mask is a supernatural artifact that submerges the wearer’s own personality and brings elements of his id to the surface. These elements consist of cartoon-like violence regardless of who is modeling the accessory. A consortium of alien leaders whose planets have been plundered and destroyed by the mask’s previous wearer has hired inter-galactic bounty hunter, Lobo, to apprehend this terrorist. Cases of mistaken identity have been the source of humor for centuries, though rarely do they result in this kind of destruction.
Writers, John Arcudi and Alan Grant break the fourth wall to great comedic effect by featuring editor, Dan Raspler apologizing to the readers for the gratuitous violence…just as he has several sharp weapons imbedded in his head.
