I Feel Sick

Can a Goth comic truly be funny? Jhonen Vasquez’s “I Feel Sick” comes awfully close. Vasquez, creator of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, offers up a morbidly comical tale revolving around Devi, the semi-sane lead character of the book and all her friends (and enemies). Like most young hermits, Devi stays in her apartment, unless dragged out by best pal Tenna. She relives—almost with relish—the dark moments of her past, including a car accident with a horny boyfriend. Oh yeah, and she thinks her painting of a doll is talking to her. Vasquez’s story shows deft pacing and some truly funny and touching moments as Devi and Tenna make their way in the world. It’s a rather dark world, where one can dine in a restaurant called Eat or Die and hang out in vampire bars where, of course, the music always sucks. But this comic sure doesn’t.
