Tales of the Closet

Set in 1987, Tales of the Closet follows the stories of eight racially diverse characters who are coming to grips with their sexual orientations deemed “deviant” by their family and peers; from Scotland who is the only openly homosexual guy in school, to Shorty who frets about her “dyke-ish” behavior because of her attraction to statuesque blondes at bus stops.

Artist Ivan Velez, Jr. has a austere artistic style that reflects the harshness of the realities the characters are experiencing. The spacing of the comic panels may seem overwhelming at first, as there is so much movement on a single page, but it captures the claustrophobia of what it must feel like while confined in the closet.
