Red Sonja: Scavenger Hunt

    (Marvel, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Marvel Characters, Inc.

This one-shot special finds the red-headed swordswoman embarking on a quest to reclaim a lost suit of magical armor. The armor had originally been given by a prince to his loved one, and supposedly was enchanted in such a way as to keep her soul safe until she would give herself to him. But while it may have made the parts it actually covered invulnerable to harm, it seems to have had the same weakness as Sonja’s own armor—namely that it leaves an awful lot uncovered. The owner came to harm, and the suit was lost, with pieces scattered along a long road populated by thieves, monsters, and other perils.

Red Sonja agreed to join the woman who told her of the armor on a quest to recover it, provided she receive her share of the take. As the story continues, however, more and more swordswomen seem to pop up, all looking for the same thing. It all makes for an amusing, if formulaic story, with some nice art by a rogues’ gallery of artists.
