When a couple visits a flea market, they see a curious stuffed animal that catches their eye.

However, the proprietor, Keller, refuses to part with his dear toy “Waldo” and, instead, shares a tall tale with them at the local tavern.

What follows is a demented version of Felix the Cat. Sailing with the merchant marine, Keller had met Frankie, who once was stranded on a South Pacific island with innocent natives and his new love Lonnie. However, his bliss was ruined, when the real-life Waldo crashed the party and coerced the islanders to manufacture toys in his likeness. However, the volcano blew its top! Later, through another twist of fate, Frankie managed to get his hands on a Waldo doll.

Collectors from The Antiques Roadshow to the Internet will understand how an insignificant item can have a unique history that justifies its outrageous price. Kim Deitch displays a suitable obsession for detail in both story and style. But, as with most such narratives, a few fanatics may value intricacies that may bore the masses.
