The Rocketeer: The Official Movie Adaptation

    (Disney, 1991)

This remarkably faithful movie adaptation does a wonderful job of capturing both the whimsy and nostalgia of the Disney movie, as well as the magic of Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer character.

The story begins when pilot Cliff Secord is testing a new airplane at a small airfield in1938. Suddenly, the peace is shattered by a car roaring across the field, pursued by another car filled with FBI agents. The gangsters in the first vehicle crash into a hangar, but one escapes and manages to hide something in the hangar before being captured. Cliff and his mechanic discovered the device—an experimental jet-pack—and Cliff learned to use it to fly through the air like a rocket. Dubbed “the Rocketeer,” he soon winds up tangling with gangsters, the FBI and a secret Nazi conspiracy. It’s all high-flying fun, and a terrifically enjoyable tale, beautifully drawn by Russ Heath.
