The adventure comic strip was created by Roy Crane (1901-1977) starting in 1943, starring a Navy pilot and his gunner buddy, Roscoe Sweeny—and featuring the stylish art of Crane, who used screening to great effect in the black-and-white daily strips. The strip long outlived Crane, but the comic book had only a short run.
