Black Diamond Western
(Lev Gleason, 1949-1956)
™ and ©1951 Lev Gleason Publications, Inc.
In the mold of the Lone Ranger or Zorro, the Black Diamond is a masked Western character. Clad in a red shirt, black hat, and mask which wraps around his head like Zorro’s, Black Diamond roams the West securing justice for settlers and thwarting the schemes of outlaws. But unlike the vigilante Lone Ranger, Black Diamond has legal standing as a badge-carrying Federal Marshall. His territory is uncommonly vast as he is involved locales as widespread as Montana and Arizona.
In place of Tonto, the Black Diamond’s companion is a man named Bumper, whose handlebar mustache gives him the appearance of boxer John L. Sullivan. His tan Palomino, Reliapon, is a magnificent horse in keeping with the tradition of the Lone Ranger’s Silver, Roy Roger’s Trigger, and Hopalong Cassidy’s Topper.
— George Haberberger
