Ariel Schrag strikes again with her latest batch of day-in-the-life comics, Potential—the Slave Labor Graphics follow-up to her 1999 graphic novel Awkward. Packaged again as a black and white, hand lettered book, Schrag’s continuing adventures into the world of “real life” comics takes form in this multiple issue serial—a departure from her previous all in one graphic novel.

Where Awkward followed the author’s life through her freshman year of high school, Potential starts off at the beginning of her junior year. Finally coming to terms with her true sexual orientation, Schrag taps into the “potential” of the year before her and takes the reader on a strange, yet painfully familiar, journey.

The naive art style (straight forward line art with little to no detail) fits the story’s theme perfectly, making the at times heart breaking tale of a teenage girl coming into herself easier to swallow by mass market standards.
