Following the success of Classics Illustrated, the publishers decided to broaden their line in 1953 by launching a series based on popular fairy tales. Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland had been tried in the earlier Classics Illustrated series, but the somewhat older readers of that line did not receive it well. The new series of Classics Illustrated Junior editions proved wildly popular, however, and soon was reprinted to almost the same extent that the main series had been. A Canadian publisher is now releasing 50th anniversary editions of these junior classics.

Among the works covered were The Little Mermaid, The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, The Wizard of Oz, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Pinocchio, and other childhood favorites. From a collector’s point of view, the Junior editions are a bargain, with almost all later printings selling for just a few dollars, in comparison to the princely prices that issues of Classics Illustrated often command.
