The Wolfman

    (Dell, 1964)
™ and ©1963 Universal Pictures Co., Inc.

This notable inclusion in the Dell Movie Classics series faithfully adapts the famous 1941 Lon Chaney, Jr., horror film in which hapless Larry Talbot falls victim to an ancient gypsy curse and assumes the attributes of a wolf when the moon is full. Innocuous as it may seem today, this was a controversial move at the time, as the Comics Code Authority prohibited any depictions of supernatural lycanthropy (werewolves), even if taken from respectable sources. How did Dell get away with it? Dell, as the suppliers of certified family-friendly fare, were one of the few publishers who did not subscribe to the Comics Code, so Dell books never carried the CCA stamp. This is probably the only instance where they published material that would otherwise have been censored.
