Conan: Return of Styrm
(Marvel, 1998)
™ and ©1998 Marvel Entertainment Group
Conan is brought in as an unwilling savior of the town of Valdover in this three-issue mini-series. Apparently, he had killed the mercenaries who were scheduled to save the town from the ravages of the dragon Styrm. As a result, the sorceress in charge of the town used a combination of threats and bribes to secure his word to save the town instead.
Writer Matt Nixon stretches things out, giving penciler Paolo Parente plenty of pointless battle scenes to draw during the course of the series, which neither thrill nor advance the plot. The sorceress, it seems, is perfectly willing to grind through dozens of assassin helpers in order to get Conan’s aid—throwing them away in a succession of meaningless battles with Conan in order “to prove his worth.” At three giant-sized issues, the series seems easily 2-1/2 issues too long to communicate this by-the-book tale.
