The Monolith (DC)

The title character in this ongoing series is a monster (a golem, to be precise), but this is not a horror comic book. Rather, it is a story about a Brooklyn beauty who has been given a second chance to clean up and live right—and her beast, a gargantuan creature created around the time of the Depression to ward off a gang of mobsters. The premise is pithy and intriguing, giving the series unlimited potential, and the art is gorgeously realistic and finely detailed, giving the origin story an added sense of permanence within the DC universe.

Apparently set within the standard DC universe (the one with the Justice League and stuff), The Monolith is an intriguing creation that will, hopefully, sell enough copies to mainstream comic-book consumers (super-hero buffs) to become a commercially viable series. If that means guest-starring Batman (complete with cover appearance) to draw attention to the series, then go for it, DC. In fact, that’s not such a bad idea. The intelligent, though super-power-less, Batman would be a nice juxtaposition to the brutish, though ultra-powerful, Monolith.
