When asked to name one of the longest-running independent comics, few will think of this one. It may be because of its infrequent publishing schedule, but more likely it’s because most mainstream comics fans don’t hold much interest in a political anthology comics magazine.

Well, they should.

This mag is approaching, believe it or not, its 25th birthday. Founded by Peter Kuper and Seth Tobocman, each issue features a collection of liberal-leaning comic strips, illustrated stories, and articles focusing on a specific and topical political theme. In this issue, the theme “Taking Liberties” takes the current administration to task for its post-Sept. 11 handling of American civil liberties.

From the strikingly symbolic front cover by Mirko Ilic to Micah Ian Wright’s chilling masterpiece on the back, Editors Kuper, Kevin Pyle, and Susan Willmarth deliver a disturbing series of stories that go a long way toward making the case that the term “homeland security” is an oxymoron, showing America as a scarier place than ever. Eric Laursen’s article “The War on Everyone,” for instance, shows a side to economic policies that is rarely covered on the evening news, and “Disappeared” by Christopher Cardinale tells of a Canadian detained by America after the Sept. 11 attacks.

This magazine provides an eye-opening look at another side of American domestic and foreign policy.
