Li’l Tomboy
(Charlton, 1956-1960)
™ and ©1959 Charlton Publications, Inc.
Series continued from Fawcett’s Funny Animals #91
Li’l Tomboy presents a twist on the tried and true “little-brat” school of kid humor comics as the title character—a spirited 6 year-old in a red dress—not only engages in the usual pranks against parents, teachers, friends and pets, but also confounds her mother’s rigid expectation of “proper” behavior from a little girl. As the title suggests, Li’l Tomboy is happier stomping around in the mud, playing sports with the boys and mouthing off to teachers than engaging in traditional girl activities. This single joke is the source of most of the laughs in each issue. Unfortunately, Li’l Tomboy isn’t up to anything nearly as interesting as the sophisticated and subversive humor of Little Lulu (an obvious influence), nor are the gags as funny as Dennis the Menace.
